Military grade Pelican Cases are used for safe and secure shipping. These containers are the world’s toughest, most secure containers available. After determining the size needed, we ship a case to you followed by an email with your encrypted unique lock code to be used for return shipping. Fill, lock, and securely ship the case back to us. Degaussing involves exposing magnetic devices to powerful magnetic fields to render a device its data erased, and the device unusable. Devices such as a hard drive disk rely on their magnetic properties to spin inside their enclosure so that data can be read. These powerful magnetic fields scramble the data through de-polarization, leave the device inoperable, and decimate the device’s firmware so that it’s ability to communicate with a computer are lost.
Modern magnetic storage devices can contain hundreds of thousands of “sectors” where packets of data are stored. These sectors provide a buffer zone between the packets so that if one sector is damaged it does not nullify all data on the device. Because of the numerous sectors that must be cleared to render the device’s data sanitized the process is time-consuming and rarely used.
Degaussing is, however, an effective method when regulations call for the device to remain physically intact but no longer functional.
